Antiquity League 08-01-1962 Home | | | Breaking News | | Wednesday, August 1st, 1962: Best AL Rookie Named, Nod to Williams For the last thirty days he outperformed all the other newcomers in the Antiquity League. So it was no surprise that Philadelphia's left fielder Billy Williams took the Rookie of the Month honors today.
In July he hit .350 as he ran up some impressive offensive numbers. In 26 games he collected 36 hits, 4 home runs, 13 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
So far this year Williams is batting .330 with 18 home runs, 53 RBIs and 78 runs scored. | | Wednesday, August 1st, 1962: Cleveland's Koufax Top Pitcher in July The Cleveland Stevedores owe Sandy Koufax a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in July, Koufax tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the Antiquity League Pitcher of the Month award.
"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Koufax, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."
It was Koufax who did the banging in July as he tossed up 45 strikeouts in 46.1 innings, holding opponents to a .158 average and posting a 2.14 ERA.
This year Koufax has worked 181.1 innings with 201 strikeouts en route to a 15-2 record and 2.43 ERA. | | Wednesday, August 1st, 1962: AL's Top Hitter Selected Boston right fielder Roger Maris certainly turned heads in July with some impressive numbers. He batted .301 for the month and was voted the Antiquity League Batter of the Month award.
He banged 10 home runs, collected 29 RBIs, scored 21 times and put up a .391 on-base percentage.
Currently Maris has 37 home runs and a .291 batting average. | | | | | Yesterday's Games | | | | Away Team | Home Team | Result | Time | Winning Pitcher | Losing Pitcher | | Houston | Boston | 7-8 | 7:05 pm | D.Colpaert (7-5, 3.60 ERA) | A.Earley (0-3, 6.13 ERA) | | Los Angeles | Detroit | 6-2 | 7:05 pm | L.Sherry (6-6, 4.68 ERA) | D.Donovan (9-7, 3.66 ERA) | | Cleveland | New York | 9-6 | 7:05 pm | C.Pascual (10-8, 4.00 ERA) | C.Labine (0-1, 4.01 ERA) | | Chicago | Philadelphia | 3-5 | 7:05 pm | G.Perry (14-2, 2.36 ERA) | B.Blaylock (6-4, 4.57 ERA) | | Baltimore | Minnesota | 1-4 | 7:05 pm | T.Qualters (7-9, 4.56 ERA) | J.Owens (4-8, 3.89 ERA) | | Denver | San Francisco | 1-5 | 7:05 pm | S.Barber (5-4, 3.65 ERA) | D.Cardwell (4-11, 4.56 ERA) | | Havana | St. Louis | 6-3 | 7:05 pm | J.Podres (9-10, 4.86 ERA) | R.Sadecki (6-6, 2.97 ERA) | | | Today's Games | | | | Away Team | Home Team | Time | Starting Pitcher Away Team | Starting Pitcher Home Team | | Houston (49-59, Road: 23-32) | Boston (56-52, Home: 26-29) | 7:05 pm | RHP F.Lary (9-8, 3.41 ERA) | RHP J.Perry (10-4, 3.49 ERA) | | Los Angeles (60-45, Road: 37-18) | Detroit (52-53, Home: 32-23) | 7:05 pm | LHP D.Ellsworth (7-5, 2.91 ERA) | LHP H.Branch (3-5, 4.56 ERA) | | Cleveland (65-42, Road: 31-24) | New York (43-64, Home: 25-29) | 7:05 pm | RHP D.Drysdale (9-6, 5.09 ERA) | LHP A.Quirk (2-5, 4.70 ERA) | | Chicago (58-48, Road: 26-28) | Philadelphia (76-32, Home: 37-18) | 7:05 pm | LHP D.Rowe (6-9, 4.40 ERA) | LHP N.Willhite (15-5, 2.53 ERA) | | Baltimore (51-56, Road: 24-30) | Minnesota (44-62, Home: 23-35) | 7:05 pm | RHP H.Fanok (4-11, 5.77 ERA) | RHP N.Chittum (3-10, 3.99 ERA) | | Denver (36-71, Road: 16-37) | San Francisco (43-65, Home: 25-32) | 7:05 pm | RHP J.Tsitouris (1-8, 5.52 ERA) | RHP M.Pappas (0-1, 4.76 ERA) | | Havana (58-49, Road: 26-27) | St. Louis (56-49, Home: 24-21) | 7:05 pm | LHP A.Jackson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) | RHP B.Moorhead (0-0, 3.09 ERA) | | |
