 | Saturday, August 17th, 1968: Martinez Belts Bunch of Base Hits It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Ted Martinez. It was very special day, one that many players never experience. But he did. Martinez went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off Springfield pitching. When the dust settled on the diamond at Homerun Jesus Field, he had a career 5-5 day and something he will long remember. And the South Bend Irish had a 17-3 victory over the Rifles. "Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he laughed in the SION postgame interview. T. Martinez hit an RBI triple in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and was hit by a pitch in the 8th. So far this season Martinez is batting .289 with 1 home run. |
