| Breaking News | | Thursday, August 10th, 1967: Bees Maris Sidelined for 2 Weeks Roger Maris at first refused to leave today's Philadelphia-Boston game after he suffered a bruised cheekbone while making a defensive play. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I'm a competitor," the feisty Boston right fielder said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Maris out of action for 2 weeks.
Maris is currently batting .273 with 22 home runs and 62 RBIs. | | Wednesday, August 9th, 1967: Howard Slams 3 Homers for Keystones! Frank Howard of the Philadelphia Keystones had a lot to celebrate in today's 6-2 win over the Boston Bees. Three times he celebrated by pounding the ball out of MacConomy Park.
He kiddingly told reporters after the game, "Hopefully, I can continue to close my eyes and swing as hard as I can. It worked well today."
The powerful Philadelphia first baseman tagged 3 hits in 4 at-bats, drove in 5 runs, and scored 3 times in his three-home-run outburst.
Howard added, "Seriously, I just try to swing early and often to give myself a chance. I let the pitcher supply all the power, I just try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."
"We talked about changing our strategy for the third one...and then he hit another homer," the Boston manager said. "We just couldn't get him out."
F. Howard hit a solo-shot off W. Wood in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off W. Wood in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off W. Wood in the 8th.
Howard is presently hitting at a .232 pace with 23 home runs and 55 RBIs. He has played in 97 games and scored 45 times. | | Saturday, August 5th, 1967: Bees Win, Shut Out Denver Joe Horlen was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Rams. He shut them out 2-0 on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Boston manager said, "Joe was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."
The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Horlen has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."
In 1967, Horlen has chalked up 12 wins and 8 losses in 24 starts with 84 strikeouts in 183.1 innings and a 2.85 ERA. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | RF Roger Maris | bruised cheekbone | 5 days | Not on DL | | P Jim Bunning | finger blister | 2 weeks | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 58-63, .479 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 9.5 GB | | Record at home | 28-38, .424 PCT | | Record on the road | 30-25, .545 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 7-8, .467 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 17-21, .447 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 21-25, .457 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 37-38, .493 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 7-3, .700 PCT | | Record in April | 14-11, .560 PCT | | Record in May | 12-18, .400 PCT | | Record in June | 9-16, .360 PCT | | Record in July | 14-13, .519 PCT | | Record in August | 9-5, .643 PCT |
