| Breaking News | | Wednesday, August 1st, 1962: Cleveland's Koufax Top Pitcher in July The Cleveland Stevedores owe Sandy Koufax a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in July, Koufax tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the Antiquity League Pitcher of the Month award.
"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Koufax, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."
It was Koufax who did the banging in July as he tossed up 45 strikeouts in 46.1 innings, holding opponents to a .158 average and posting a 2.14 ERA.
This year Koufax has worked 181.1 innings with 201 strikeouts en route to a 15-2 record and 2.43 ERA. | | Tuesday, July 24th, 1962: Aaron on Rampage Against Orphans! 5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book and the latest honoree is Hank Aaron of the Cleveland Stevedores.
He tore up the Chicago Orphans to the tune of 5 hits in 6 at-bats in the Cleveland 5-4 win today at Lawrence Oliphant Memorial Stadium.
"Aaron was a tough out today," the Chicago manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure."
H. Aaron singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off V. McDaniel in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 9th and singled in the 11th.
This season Aaron is batting .299 with 108 hits and 23 home runs. He has scored 71 times and has 75 RBI. | | Tuesday, July 24th, 1962: Cleveland's Brewer Injured "It was kinda freaky. Hopefully, I'll be back in the lineup soon," said a dejected Jim Brewer after injuring himself in a game against Chicago. The Cleveland manager told SION reporters, "He will miss up to 8 weeks with a strained back muscle." The Stevedores will have to decide over the next day or two whether the closer will go on the disabled list.
To date in 1962 in 11 relief appearances, Brewer has recorded 4 saves while posting an ERA of 1.35 and 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched. His totals for the year also include 1 win and no losses. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | RF Jim Lemon | back spasms | 4 months | 13 day(s) left (60-day DL) | | P Jim Brewer | strained back muscle | 7 weeks | 14 day(s) left | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 65-42, .607 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 34-18, .654 PCT | | Record on the road | 31-24, .564 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 5-6, .455 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 18-15, .545 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 22-14, .611 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 43-28, .606 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 16-11, .593 PCT | | Record in May | 15-12, .556 PCT | | Record in June | 17-10, .630 PCT | | Record in July | 17-9, .654 PCT |
