| Breaking News | | Tuesday, October 6th, 1964: Los Angeles Draws Blanks Against Gibson Before the game Bob Gibson liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Keystones pitcher whitewashed the Los Angeles Bums 7-0.
Gibson said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."
The Philadelphia starter held Los Angeles scoreless, giving up 4 hits while registering 3 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.
"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Bums manager said in his postgame interview.
"When that happens, you usually lose."
On his stats sheet this season Gibson shows a 20-11 record, 35 starts, 280.1 innings, 163 strikeouts and a 3.27 ERA. | | Sunday, September 20th, 1964: Bums Starting Pitcher Hurt The Bums received bad news this morning. Mitsuhiro Adachi will miss 7-8 months due to a torn labrum. In the Los Angeles-San Francisco game he sustained the injury while throwing a pitch. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Adachi sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."
Thus far this season Adachi has posted a 15-9 record, started 32 games, struck out 74 batters in 216.2 innings and compiled a 3.16 ERA. | | Tuesday, September 8th, 1964: Javier Tags Lefties 5 Hits History in the making. That's what the fans at Bums Los Angeles Coliseum got to see today in the Havana 8-2 triumph over the Bums. Julian Javier of the Los Angeles came to the plate 5 times and came away with a dynamite day as he exploded for 5 hits against the Lefties. "It was a great day for me, but a disappointing one for our fans," he said to the reporters covering the game. "I wish I could have won it for them. They like stats, but they love winning."
In the postgame press conference the Havana skipper quipped to reporters, "Hey, we tried to get him out. We threw everything but the kitchen sink against him and he hit it. Maybe we should've thrown the kitchen sink. I am just glad we escaped with a win. Javier was lethal."
J. Javier singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
This season Javier has hit at a .305 clip with 57 RBIs, 8 home runs and 39 runs scored.
